Understanding Earth Day: Fun Facts to Learn

What is Earth Day and why do people celebrate it?

Earth Day is celebrated around the world on April 22nd. Today, billions of people come together to engage in activities that help make our planet better.

Most importantly, it’s an opportunity to spread awareness about the state of our planet and work together to make changes. From educating your children to adopting Earth-friendly routines, it’s a chance to create a happy, healthy world for us all.

What happens on Earth Day?

This celebrated day brings everyone together for a common purpose that needs our attention. It’s filled with education and action across communities, organizations, and schools, to name a few. Earth Day activities may include:

  • Picking up trash
  • Planting trees
  • Recycling
  • Conserving electricity
  • Limiting water usage
  • Parades, protests, teach-ins

How did Earth Day start?

In 1970, US Senator Gaylord Nelson launched the first Earth Day to call attention to the state of the environment. Nelson shared, “Our goal is not just an environment of clean air and water and scenic beauty. The objective is an environment of decency, quality and mutual respect for all other human beings and all living creatures.”

He believed the public had the power to come together to demand and create positive changes. The need for regulations and laws to protect our planet was a passion shared by over twenty million Americans that year.

How is Earth Day celebrated around the world?

Across the planet, Earth Day is recognized in a variety of festive, yet resourceful ways.

Japan: Tokyo’s Yoyogi Park is host to an Earth Day Festival filled with environmentally friendly charities, booths, food, and music. Many student groups provide workshops and resources.

Canada: Canadians gather at McMaster University for a ceremonial tree planting. Cities participate in a Tree Planting Relay and spread awareness through activities focused on sustainability.

Spain: The Global Unity and Regeneration Gathering is a 24-hour event offering workshops, resources, and presentations on protecting the environment. The day also explores spirituality and ways to connect to the earth.

Denmark: Copenhagen celebrates with a performance of drummers as they face each corner of the earth. The March for Science follows demanding accountability from their elected officials for more green initiatives.

How can you get your kids involved?

It’s never too early to get your children excited about protecting our planet. From Mother Nature books for your young ones to an afternoon of Earth Day crafts, setting an example will instill a love and responsibility for the health of our environment.

  • Share the importance of recycling and how they can do their part with a catchy recycling music video they can get excited about.
  • Take a stroll around the house and discover ways to reduce electricity use.
  • Create a checklist of ways they help save water each day, like turning off the faucet while brushing teeth.
